Interesting fact about caffeine


Most of us consume some sort of caffeine daily – whether it be in our morning coffee, tea, or other food/beverages. While we know it helps to give us an energy boost when we need it… there’s a lot that most of us probably DON’T know about caffeine. So check out these 10 interesting facts:
  1. The chemical name for caffeine is 1,3,7- trimethylxanthine. Sounds yumcoffee, caffeinemy right??
  2. Caffeine occurs naturally in 60 different plants like – coffee beans, tea leaves, guarana (the source of caffeine in energy drinks).
  3. 90% of Americans consume some sort of caffeine each day.
  4. Ever wonder how caffeine works? It increases your dopamine levels (makes you feel happy) and also blocks adenosine receptors (stops you from getting drowsy).
  5. Caffeine has been known to have positive effects like increasing your ability to learn, comprehension, memory, reflexes, and thought clarity.
  6. Insomnia is one adverse effect of caffeine – the stimulant effect keeps your brain overactive and thus prevents sleep.
  7. The International Olympic Committee banned caffeine in Olympic competitions.
  8. It is estimated that 12,000 tons of caffeine is consumed every year.
  9. The average American consumes 280mg of caffeine daily – that equates to 2-3 cups of coffee per day.
  10. Decaffeinated products actually still have caffeine in them. In the US, decaffeinated means that less than 2.5% of the product is caffeine.
